Bead Blasting
« on: August 29, 2012, 05:43:14 PM »
I have an old railroad lantern that has developed a slight patina of rust.  I'd rather not clean it with steel wool, et al, as that would leave discernable scratches.

Anybody know of someone that can bead blast it?  Sand blasting would probably be a bit too aggressive, whereas beads (glass, etc) would likely just clean off most of the patina so I can seal it up.

Ship it to Rick's Restoration in Vegas. Probably would only be a $2,000 job for them.  ;D

Sodablasting is more what you are looking for Tree.
Soda Blasting is a revolutionary cleaning technology that uses a non-destructive abrasive and eliminates environmentally hazardous chemicals.

Soda blasting can be used wet or dry to remove paint, corrosion, biological contaminants, oil, grease, carbon, and many other coatings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Soda Blast Process

This new paint stripping technology eliminates toxic cleaning chemicals. It cleans multi-layered surfaces to any level desired and can be used while most machines and processes are in operation. It is a safe, portable, wet or dry, non-destructive stripping process.

The soda blast media is a specially formulated sodium bicarbonate -- baking soda. This non-toxic, food-grade material is 100% water soluble and environmentally safe.

Soda blasting uses compressed air to propel the media onto the area to be cleaned. When the media comes in contact with the contaminant on the substrate, the sodium bicarbonate particles explode.

When I saw the title of the thread I thought, "What the hell is tree doing with anal beads?"

Never said I wanted to know!
It's kinda like the "Chinese food and cats/dogs" question - briefly ponder the possibility then accept the probability and move on!  :D

For closure - someone suggested baking soda, so I got a cheap blaster and put a pound of it in.  With enough pressure, it does a decent job.  You definitely want respiratory protection...

And rinse it throughly with water before paint.
